Imperial Irrigation District mulls options for water storage

From the Imperial Valley Press:

The Imperial Irrigation District is examining water storage options as the Bureau of Reclamation projects IID will use 113,000 acre-feet of water less than its 3.1 million acre-feet allotment by the end of the year. The under-run is a sharp contrast to the 100,000 acre-feet projected over-run that the IID had at this time last year, and the district finished out 2008 with a 48,000 under-run.

“Ground storage would even out the boom-or-bust cycle on our water use,” IID General Manager Brian Brady said.

The IID does not have any way to store water within its service territory, and new facilities could take up to five years to build, which leaves the district with few options if the under-run does maintain throughout the year.
