El Nino would hand a welcome gift to California, says editorial

From Redding’s Record Searchlight, this editorial:

A Christmas gift for California in July?

It’s too early to unwrap the present, but the weather forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) dropped a welcome hint about what’s to come Thursday when they announced that El Nino has arrived.

The climate phenomenon is named for its trademark Christmastime warm waters off the coast of South America – “El Nino,” Spanish for “the little boy,” refers to the Christ child – but it affects weather throughout the West.

The pattern isn’t as reliable as flipping a light switch, but it is strongly associated with heavy rainfall in California. NOAA’s announcement, in describing El Nino’s effects, actually declared it a problem for the state: “El Nino’s negative impacts have included damaging winter storms in California.”

True enough, but after three straight dry years, we could use a winter of gully-washers.
