From the Imperial Valley Press:

As the Imperial Irrigation District’s infrastructure on the water and energy sides ages, a pair of recent studies put the total cost for necessary replacements at $5.1 billion over the next 50 years. “We need to start taking care of things,” IID water manager Mike King said, “but it’s a lot of money.”

The estimates are for existing equipment only, not for new construction.

The water department faces $1.4 billion, in today’s dollars, in infrastructure replacement costs, according to a study performed by consulting firm R.W. Beck. These include everything from the Imperial Dam to canal gates, to irrigation and drainage structures.
