Worrying about water: Legislation may send supplies to thirsty SoCal

“Those involved in water issues in the Mid-Valley may have dry mouths today as they anticipate a vital — and potentially momentous — water bill coming out of Sacramento.

Though the bulk of the bill is believed to be aimed at the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, water experts locally said ongoing disputes on how much water is sent to Southern California hold the most concern for the region.

“Depending on the outcome, this bill could be extremely damaging to water availability for us in Northern California,” said Walter Cotter, general manager of the Browns Valley Irrigation District. “The language they started with last week was fraught with issues.”

Water-dependent agriculture in the southern half of the Central Valley, along with ever-growing populations in Los Angeles and beyond, have led to more calls for a conveyance system of getting water from the northern to southern part of the state. …”
