And this… California lawmakers race to get water, energy deals

“With just hours remaining in their legislative session, California lawmakers on Friday had yet to agree on their most pressing priorities — water reform, prison spending and renewable energy mandates.

Lawmakers were racing to beat a midnight deadline with votes remaining on dozens of bills. The legislative leaders avoided routine votes in their respective houses to huddle for rushed negotiations over the top outstanding issues.

The most contentious of those — and the one with the most far-reaching consequences — is how to rebuild California’s decades-old water storage and delivery system while protecting the environment.

With piles of task force reports and months of committee hearings behind them, lawmakers still had not created a water package with bipartisan support by early afternoon. …”
