Caballero addresses water conference committee report approval

Posted by: Aqua Blog Maven on September 11, 2009 at 7:21 pm

From the website of Assemblymember Anna Cabellero:

” Assemblywoman Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) Chair of Local Government and member of the Joint Water Conference Committee made the following statement addressing the committee’s approval of the conference report:

“It has been an honor to be a member of the Water Conference Committee. Over the past two weeks I have heard over thirty hours of public testimony describing the needs and woes of water delivery and ecosystem peril in our state. We have discussed long and short terms solutions such as: conservation, storage, ecosystem restoration, reliability, water quality governance and financing. It is my belief that any final water package should be comprehensive. I have signed the conference report, not because it is ready in its final form, but because I have been assured that it is a work in progress.”

“The committee’s time limitations dictate we have a product that can be shared with the public. However, we understand that more work is needed. I pledge my time and energy to continue to urge a compromise. More importantly, I signed because I have been assured by Senate President pro Tem Steinberg and Assembly Speaker Bass that the product of the committee would not reach the floor of the Assembly or Senate without a financing mechanism, which requires a 2/3 vote. I am encouraged by this direction and feel comfortable that the discussions will continue.””
