Commentary: Bay Delta canal makes little sense

” Water issues in California are as simple or complex as you want to make them. The simple issues are that Southern California imports water from far away so everything we do to maximize local resources is valuable. The complex issues are California’s arcane water policies, historical water rights, and literally thousands of public and privately owned water purveyors with differing regional perspectives about water supply and environmental restoration.

The last minute water discussions going on right now in Sacramento reek of backroom deal-making. All who oppose the old school solutions like dams and canals are excluded. The governor waits to light up his cigar and is threatening to veto any water bills that don’t include a multi-billion dollar bond to pay for more dams and the newly-named Delta Conveyance, formerly known as the Peripheral Canal.

In Southern California, the Santa Clara, Los Angeles, and San Gabriel rivers’ upper watersheds have suffered extensive damage by fires. Local watershed groups working with agencies have done much successful work, however, the funding from the previous water bond was frozen for work already completed due to the state financial crisis. Local infrastructure has also taken a beating with main trunk lines blowing out busy intersections and fire trucks being sucked into sinkholes. …”
