Cloud seeding to continue this year for Truckee River basin

“Despite being axed by state budget cuts, a cloud-seeding program that squeezes 5 to 15 percent more snow out of winter storms will operate this year for the Truckee River but is questionable for the rest of the state.

The Truckee Meadows Water Authority is helping the Reno-based Desert Research Institute continue cloud seeding for the Truckee River basin that supplies water for the Reno-Sparks area. TMWA also is asking local ski resorts for a helping hand.

Elsewhere, the Southern Nevada Water Authority will vote in October on whether to fund cloud-seeding for southern Nevada and DRI officials are trying to find ways to fund cloud-seeding for the Walker River Basin, near Hawthorne.

If those efforts are all successful, that would keep all or most of the program going this winter for the nation’s driest state, John Warwick, DRI interim executive vice president for research, told the Washoe County Commission this week. …”
