San Diego County Water Authority budget pinched by conservation’s success: Sales down 21 percent so far this fiscal year

“People have been so diligent about saving water that San Diego County’s main water agency may have to cut its budget and dip into reserves.

The warning came in an informational report to be considered by the San Diego County Water Authority on Thursday.

According to the report, the authority sold 21 percent less water to local water districts during July and August of this year than during the same period a year ago, a bigger drop than expected. Water sales make up 58 percent of the authority’s funding.

While the period covers just the first two months of the fiscal year, the report cautioned that if the trend continues, the authority may need to reduce costs and withdraw money from its Rate Stabilization Fund. The fund lets the authority smooth out short-term financial fluctuations without having to raise rates. …”
