Agreement to let water pass between 2 reservoirs

“The seasonal rise and fall of Lake Hodges’ water level will soon become a phenomenon of the past, as the Olivenhain Municipal Water District and county Water Authority have settled a dispute that had blocked sharing water between two reservoirs.

The dispute stemmed from a plan that would have involved frequent exchanges of water between the Lake Hodges reservoir and the Olivenhain Reservoir, built in 2003 a little more than a mile away in Elfin Forest southwest of Escondido.

The plan concerned Olivenhain because impurities from Lake Hodges would contaminate the reservoir at a faster rate, and the Olivenhain Water District’s treatment plant would be unable to handle it. Olivenhain officials said it could cost from $40 million to $80 million to beef up its treatment to handle the dirtier water.

The Olivenhain district threatened to sue the authority last year unless something was done to maintain the reservoir’s water quality. …”
