Commentary: Stockton now is getting a little too much attention from the state

“These are interesting times for Stockton, the city that routinely feels ignored by our state government friends in Sacramento.

That hasn’t been the case recently. Appointed bureaucrats and the state’s top elected official are spending an inordinate amount of time determining what should go in Stockton (a huge prison hospital complex) and what should go around it (a peripheral canal).

The problem is many in local leadership want no part of the prison hospital and think the peripheral canal – or as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger likes to call it, the “conveyance” – is a slap across our collective faces.

Mayors, supervisors and business leaders who are bemoaning these developments need to toughen up and decide how they want to be dealt with by the Sacramento harpoonists. …”
