Water rate protests not pouring in: Objections are up from past go-rounds, but well short of threshold to block hike

“At least 50 percent of San Diego city water customers must file protest forms or letters by Tuesday if they want to stop a proposed 7.75 percent rate increase due to take effect in Jan. 1, and so far the number of protests received by the City Clerk is far short of the threshold needed.

This paves the way for the City Council to approve the rate increase Tuesday. Water officials said the hike is needed to cover the higher cost of buying imported water.

It’s extremely rare , if not unheard of, for customers to garner enough protests to override a water rate increase. Water officials in the county said they are not aware of a single instance where an agency in the region was prevented from raising rates due to sufficient protests being submitted. …”
