IID increases fallowing payments in hopes of more participation
Posted by: Aqua Blog Maven on December 21, 2007 at 6:50 pmFrom KXO Radio, IID announced that it is increasing the payment for fallowing, up to $85 per acre foot in hopes of attracting more participants for the fallowing program:
The District has conducted five successful fallowing programs to generate conserved water to fulfill annual water transfer delivery schedules for the San Diego County Water Authority, Salton Sea mitigation requirements, payback of previous year’s overuse or inadvertent over-runs of Colorado River water, and to assist in the management of IID’s annual 3.1 million acre-foot River water allotment cap. The payment rate for the current fallowing program is $75 per acre-foot. For a variety of factors influencing 2008 water demands, demands are on the rise.
Those factors include ongoing drought forecasts, favorable crop markets, and 2006 payback requirements. The IID is required to meet certain conserved water targets for transfer to San Diego, and to provide interim Salton Sea mitigation water.
