Former San Bernardino Mayor Holcomb Gets Water Award

“The word “hero” doesn’t sit comfortably with former San Bernardino Mayor W. R. “Bob” Holcomb.

It was first applied to him during World War II when he won eight air medals as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. “That was enough ‘hero’ for me,” said the 87-year-old when I visited him at his home Wednesday.

Nonetheless, the word was — properly — applied to him again on Saturday night when Cal State San Bernardino’s Water Resources Institute named him its Water Hero for 2009.

Forty-five years ago, Holcomb fought an uphill battle to keep L.A.’s Metropolitan Water District from taking control of San Bernardino’s underground aquifer, the Bunker Hill Basin. City leaders at the time were unanimous in their support for the MWD takeover. …”
