State water costs may trickle down to Santa Barbara; State legislature approves $11.1B bond issue

“Many California lawmakers are currently patting one another on the back for passing legislation designed to improve the reliability of the state’s water supply, but the issue of how the many of the needed improvements will be funded has not yet reached a definitive point. The $11.1 billion bond issue—which took a $2 billion hike a week ago, during those last few days of legislative negotiation—to pay for the list of projects included in the five-bill package still has to go to voters, most likely next fall.
“The legislation represents a serious commitment by state government to address California’s water problems,” said Steve Amerikaner, who represents the Central Coast Water Authority (CCWA), an agency administering State Water in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. “Nobody should be holding their breath,” he added, noting the pending ballot initiative. By all accounts, the success of the $11.1 billion initiative depends heavily upon the state of the economy at the time it reaches the ballot. …”
