Commentary: Another battle down in California’s water wars

From the Contra Costa Times, this commentary by Michael J. Reagan, a member of the Solano County Board of Supervisors representing a district that encompasses eastern Solano County: Dixon, Rio Vista, the unincorporated area of Elmira and the eastern portions of Vacaville and Suisun City:

“The Governor has signed a package of water bills that once again pits north against south in California’s historic water wars. Among other things, the south will get their long-coveted Peripheral Canal, an expressway that bypasses the Delta as it delivers more and more of our water to the populous end of the Golden State.

This is just one battle in the war — there are many legal and political battles to come in the years ahead — but after every battle, it’s important to find the little victories in defeat.

More than anything, we won a strengthened partnership among Solano County, the Solano County Water Agency, Solano Resource Conservation District and Reclamation District 2068, and among the other Delta counties of Contra Costa, Sacramento, San Joaquin and Yolo.

We are the Delta Counties Coalition (DCC) — with a solidarity of purpose and voice that remains critical in getting any Delta issues addressed.

We won a voice for the Delta in decisions being made about its future. County supervisors from each of the five Delta counties will have a seat on the Delta Protection Commission (DPC) and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy — strengthening the local government perspective. … “
