San Mateo dives into state water issues

“The Belmont City Council is set to decide tonight whether to oppose new state water diversion policies and a proposed peripheral canal that would ship water from the Delta to Southern California.
Outgoing Councilman Bill Dickenson authored the resolution that is critical of state Sen. Joe Simitian’s legislation, Senate Bill 1, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger’s desire to build a canal and more dams.
Simitian, D-Palo Alto, calls for the formation of the Delta Stewardship Council that Dickenson said will ultimately benefit corporate agribusiness in San Joaquin Valley and Southern California at the risk of salmon, Delta smelt, striped bass, green sturgeon and other populations already on the decline.
Dickenson sat on the Resource Management and Climate Protection Committee of the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County for which water issues are a main concern.
Conservation efforts made in Northern California will simply benefit people in Southern California, Dickenson said. … “
