Uninspected line repairs caused 800-gallon seweage spill

“Failure to inspect the new lining on a sewer pipe that connected to the main line caused an 800-gallon raw sewage spill on Laws Avenue last week.

City public works crews went into overtime keeping the sewage out of area homes and a nearby creek, according to Ukiah Public Works Director Tim Eriksen. The spill, the only one of its kind Eriksen knew of, happened just a few days after new liner was installed.

“The contractor is going to pay back the city for its response,” Ukiah Valley Sanitation District Manager Rick Kennedy said. “The city did an excellent cleanup job. The (state) regional water board is not fining us because of that, but if it had, the contractor would have paid for that.”

The district hired the Salem, Ore. firm Michaels Corporation this summer to rehabilitate 7,133 feet of its sewer system’s main pipeline, according to Kennedy, and work began in September. Michaels subcontracted with Pacific Liners of Vacaville to reline another nearly 900 feet of lateral pipes that tie into the main line.

“They (Pacific) were in a hurry at the end of the day and they did not post-inspect three laterals, and it was one of those three that had the problem,” Kennedy said. … “
