Flowing toward health: Interest shown Valley rivers gives hope better days are ahead for our sick streams, says editorial

“Another river that flows through the Valley is coming back to life. Or at least has a chance at a new life.

The Mokelumne, which in San Joaquin County starts in the east at Camanche Reservoir and flows into Lodi Lake west of Highway 99 before turning north-northwest to form the border with Sacramento County, has long been one of those almost rivers. It’s been there, but that’s about it.

For years flows have been cut dramatically as water at Camanche was diverted to the Bay Area. Added to that were poisons from toxic mines. Salmon runs, diminishing in Valley river after Valley river, fell from thousands just a few years ago to hundreds today. (On the Calaveras River that flows through Stockton, the steelhead population has nearly disappeared.) … “
