Melones management plan in the works

“Public comments are now being accepted on a draft plan outlining how the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation aims to manage New Melones Reservoir and surrounding lands in the future.

The Draft New Melones Lake Area Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement provides a range of alternatives for managing the reservoir’s natural, cultural and recreational resources.

New Melones Reservoir — the fifth largest reservoir in the state — sits between Tuolumne and Calaveras counties. The area included in the plan spans about 30,000 acres, including the 12,500-acre reservoir.

Under the Bureau of Reclamation’s preferred alternative, construction of floating campsites and a new recreational vehicle park would be allowed. Also permitted would be the construction of a mountain bike course and allowing an equestrian trail riding business. … “
