Officials: San Bernardino Valley’s groundwater is limited

“The San Bernardino Valley’s large groundwater basin will help the area through what could be another year of limited water supplies coming from Northern California, but officials say local groundwater won’t last forever.
State officials this week announced a historically low estimate of the amount of water that will be available from the state water project. Doug Headrick, deputy general manager of the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, said that could put more pressure on local groundwater.
“In some areas of our groundwater basin, storage levels are approaching historic lows,” Headrick said. “It’s like a drought bank: There’s only so long you can take out from the bank without putting in before it runs out.”
On Monday, the state Department of Water Resources announced that state water contractors – agencies that get and distribute water from large state-run reservoirs in Northern California – are estimated to get just 5 percent of the water they would get under ideal conditions. … “
