Conservation pays off: Watering limits relaxed for Escondido residents

“Escondido residents can water their lawns more often from now until May because the city has saved enough water to relax its lawn-irrigation restrictions.

Effective immediately, residents can water their lawns three days a week, 10 minutes per irrigation station, instead of being limited to one day a week.

Lori Vereker, the city’s utilities director, explained that Escondido residents have saved more water than anticipated, conserving 12 percent last year instead of the goal of 8 percent.

The 12 percent translates to a savings of 3,000 acre feet, or 1 billion gallons of water, said Richard Walker, the city’s deputy utilities manager.

Since occasional warm temperatures in the winter can dry up already dry lawns, Vereker asked the City Council to relax water restrictions, and the council agreed unanimously this week. … “
