Water well project revived: stimulus money to be used to drill new well for elementary school

“While some people are looking forward to Christmas gifts, Pioneer School District is grateful for what it has already received: $1.5 million in stimulus money to drill a new well to fix the arsenic-in-the-drinking-water problem at Pioneer Elementary School.

The school’s approximately 650 students and 50 staff members are served by an on-campus well that kicks out water with an arsenic concentration in the 50 parts per billion range.

Arsenic is a carcinogenic substance that occurs naturally.

That water violates a federal limit of 10 parts per billion that kicked in way back in January 2006. Since then, Pioneer has been struggling to find the money to drill an expensive well that would go far deeper than the shallow one supplying the school. … “
