Fall at San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Posted by: Maven on December 20, 2009 at 7:47 am“As the sun hangs low in the fall sky, a small boat slides into the reeds along Mud Slough at the Don Edwards wildlife refuge, one of seven such sanctuaries known collectively as the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
At this refuge, not far from Fremont Boulevard and rows of high-tech office buildings, two hunters dressed in camouflage wait. Using duck calls and floating decoys, the hunters eventually see a northern shoveler flying toward their position.
The evening quiet is broken with the crack of a shotgun blast, and the duck falls into reeds.
Today we present the final installment of our four-season photographic review, this piece exploring the fall season at Don Edwards, Antioch Dunes, San Pablo Bay and Salinas River wildlife refuges. The complex of refuges, dotting the Bay Area, spans 44,000 acres and also includes Ellicot Slough, Farallon, and Marin Islands refuges. … “
