National science group to study delta water

“The National Research Council has decided to wade into the controversial issues plaguing the troubled Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, appointing an expert committee Friday to study its water supply, fish protection, pollution and other issues.

The council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, is the nation’s foremost nongovernmental advisory group on scientific issues.

The committee’s goal will be to look for ways to shape both near-term decisions and long-range management challenges for a body of water that has become ground zero for a battle between environmentalists hoping to save dwindling fish populations and for the farmers who need the water to supply much of the country’s fresh fruits and vegetables.

In addition to developing a management plan to assure protection for such threatened fish as the delta smelt, steelhead, sturgeon and salmon species, the council will seek to identify future water-supply and -delivery options – including the potential development of a peripheral canal to carry more water to Southern California. … “
