Start looking beyond those winter storms, says editorial

From the Santa Maria Times, this editorial:

“Folks with short memories probably can’t get too excited about a recent announcement by officials that the State Water Project may be able to deliver only about 5 percent of the normal customer allotment.

Making it even more difficult are the winter storms soaking the Central Coast. If it’s raining, no need to worry about how much water we use, right?

Absolutely wrong. For newcomers and those with the aforementioned short-term memory lapses, here is brief water primer:

California historically suffers through protracted drought periods. These dry spells can last a couple of years, or a couple of decades. There is evidence that one drought lasted more than 40 years in a past era.

All climate experts can say for a certainty is that California will have wet years, usually followed by a greater number of dry years. Really helpful, huh. … “
