Water pipeline serving south Bay Area bursts

“A major State Water Project pipeline broke Tuesday, flooding a vineyard and winery parking lot near Livermore.

No water shortages are expected as a result of the break.

The 5-foot diameter pipeline ruptured about 2 p.m. Tuesday on a hill above Wente Vineyards and golf course, said Ted Thomas, spokesman for the California Department of Water Resources.

The pipe is part of a State Water Project branch that delivers water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to more than 2 million people in the south Bay Area.

The pipe is not routinely used. But the line had been delivering water at nearly full capacity for about a month because the primary conduit to the region, the South Bay Aqueduct, has been under construction, Thomas said. … “
