Watering hours, lawn-size restrictions could come to Menlo Park

“Menlo Park residents could see new restrictions on watering and lawn size early next year as part of an updated landscaping ordinance the city council is discussing.

City employees began working on the proposed law, which would potentially strengthen an existing ordinance adopted in 1992, as part of new state water conservation requirements that all cities and towns must comply with in January 2010.

Municipalities have the option of adopting their own ordinance or using a state template that is less restrictive in some areas than Menlo Park’s current law.

The city’s existing ordinance limits watering hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and requires lawns take up just 25 percent of the total landscaped area or 500 square feet per dwelling unit, whichever is greater. It does not apply to single- or two-family homes. … “
