Fontana Water Company touts high-tech system, conservation efforts

“A shower, a brush of the teeth and a cup of coffee. Residents can thank Mother Nature and the Fontana Water Company if they got all three today.

If the tap was dry, they will probably spare the former and reserve other sentiments for the latter.

“Most people don’t really understand where the water comes from or how it gets to them,” said Michael Whitehead, president of San Gabriel Valley Water Company, the El Monte-based parent company of Fontana Water.

“Whether it’s coming out of Lytle Creek or the State Water Project or being pumped out of a well, that’s one piece,” Whitehead said. “Then it’s got to be treated and it’s got to be pressured, then we got to put it in storage and move it around, 24 hours a day, so that you can turn your faucet on at 2 a.m. and get water on demand.”

Whitehead joined company officials in the company’s central control room on Arrow Route this week on the cusp of the 100th anniversary of the Association of California Water Agencies, which next year will celebrate by highlighting the importance of local water supply projects to the state’s development. … “
