“A reporter recently revealed that Stewart Resnick, a supporter of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and owner of a farming operation among other businesses, had the temerity to ask for her help on the water supply crisis caused by federal rules reducing water deliveries from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
The story, “Feinstein heeded donor, sought Delta study” (Capitol & California; Dec. 7), conveyed a sense of impropriety on the part of the Resnick and the senator.
Resnick, owner of Paramount Farms, requested the senator’s support for a review of the science that underlies federal rules restricting water pumped from the Delta to be conducted by the independent National Academy of Science.
Why is this controversial? Is there something wrong with having an independent scientific body review the federal agencies’ scientific work, especially when the agencies’ rules are causing so much harm to farmers, farmworkers and cities south of the Delta? Does a constituent who is a donor to a U.S. senator’s campaign lose the right to communicate his positions to the senator or forfeit any expectation that the issue can be judged on its merits? What hogwash. … “
