$13.2 million overhaul planned for Bay Model

“The Bay Model in Sausalito will shut its doors for three months in the spring to undergo a $13.2 million makeover with federal stimulus funds.

A new roof will be installed that will include a new solar system, seismic improvements and asbestos removal.

The solar panels incorporate glass designed to maximize the light absorbed and an anti-reflective finish to reduce reflection, officials said. Solar panels will cover less than half the roof and generate an estimated 365 kilowatts of power to supply the building’s energy needs.

“We may even be able to sell some power back,” said J.D. Hardesty, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the model. … “
