Water meter bills go out in April for Kingsburg residents

“About 1,400 Kingsburg residents could get an eye opener when their water bill arrives in April — their first look at how much water their household is actually using and being charged for. Kingsburg, like other California cities, had to comply with a state law requiring that homes with water meters be read and residents charged for usage instead of a flat fee beginning on Jan. 1. Homes constructed since 1992 have had water meters installed but not used in cities like Kingsburg that charged a flat fee. The state law changed that. “It is going to be a shock to some people at first,” said Don Jensen, Kingsburg’s finance director and heading the city’s water metering project.
The city has been working for about three years readying to read residential water meters. First, it had to determine how many homes had meters (1,400) and then make sure they worked and could be read. It also had to determine a rate charge for the water used. Residential water users now pay a flat charge of about $26 per month (depending on lot size) that could go up or down depending on usage. … “
