Upcoming frost water hearing worries local ag community

“A hearing on the future of Russian River water to protect crops from frost damage happens Tuesday in Sacramento at a meeting of the State Water Resources Control Board.

It is next in a line of meetings, task forces and concerns from water and agricultural interests that pumping Russian River water for frost protection could see new regulations. “There will not be a decision made Tuesday,” said Dave Clegern, a spokesman for the State Water Board.

Devon Jones is director of the Mendocino County Farm Bureau. In November, the Farm Bureau rented a bus to take ag people to the Capitol to show support for local interests in front of the Water Board. The Water Board’s proposal is not what the ag community hoped for after the November meeting.

“This is not a hybrid regulation,” Jones said, adding there is nothing from information submitted in November. Jones and the Farm Bureau have several complaints about the proposal which was released last Thursday.

The regulations could set a precedent for frost protection water as “unreasonable,” Jones said. … “
