Lake Perris dam fixes raise other issues

“A project to retrofit the seismically weak dam at Lake Perris would worsen air quality, affect endangered species habitat and could cause permanent loss of the motocross area at the Perris Fairgrounds, according to a report on impacts of the plan.

Although the lake would remain open during construction, access would be limited.

Release of the draft environmental report opens a public comment period through Feb. 25. A community meeting will be held next month.

A 2005 study by state engineers found that the earthen dam would crumble during an earthquake in the 7.5-magnitude range and could release billions of gallons of water. The state dropped the lake 25 feet.

To remedy the problem, the state plans to inject cement and soil into the structure’s foundation and build a berm on top. … “
