Open all fronts on the war on drought, says editorial

From the Pasadena Star-News, this editorial:

“You can guess what the water experts are saying about the relationship between recent rainfall totals and the protracted drought. One year of rain is not enough. The drought is not over. There are systemic problems that need fixing.

Unfortunately, they are right.

Even with the anticipated rainfall for this weekend, the state’s sorry water supply picture has not been rectified. Three years of drought, plus the environmental degradation to the ecosystem in and around the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta – the source of imported water for 25 million Californians – make the problem systemic and not easily cured. Any real solutions – both statewide and local – must be applied on numerous fronts in the water war.

First, we’re buoyed by the Obama administration’s commitment to helping the state fix the problem. … “
