Despite high lake level, north state water allocations may not increase

“Although Lake Shasta’s water level is higher than it has been in three years, north state agricultural water districts may receive only half of their federal water allotments this growing season.

“We haven’t crossed that line from drought to normal yet,” said Pete Lucero, spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Sacramento.

While Lake Shasta was 81 percent full, and only 30 feet below Shasta Dam’s high-water mark, as of Wednesday, Lucero said other reservoirs around the state aren’t faring as well. Lake Oroville was at 43 percent and Folsom Lake was at 51 percent, according to the state Department of Water Resources.

While those reservoirs rely on snowmelt, Lake Shasta is filled mostly by rain. And wet winter storms brought the rain, boosting the lake 91 feet since the start of the year. … “
