Baca backs basin bill

“The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill that would require the U.S. Geological Survey to study perchlorate levels in water supplies near Rialto and Colton.

U.S. Rep. Joe Baca, D-San Bernardino, introduced the bill. The bill can now be considered by the Senate.

“This study is going to give us very clear groundwater information,” said Rialto Councilman Ed Scott, who testified in favor of the bill.

Perchlorate is a chemical compound used as a rocket fuel additive that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers to be a possible danger to the thyroid gland if ingested in large doses. An underground perchlorate plume has its origins in a 160-acre area in north Rialto where fireworks and defense companies operated after World War II. … “
