Salmon season a disaster for San Mateo County fishermen

“San Mateo County’s commercial fishers struggled to make ends meet during the summer’s dismal Chinook salmon season, which just concluded.

But last week’s announcement that U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke had again formally declared California a disaster area — potentially making federal financial aid available — cast a small ray of hope over the embattled commercial fishing fleet docked at Pillar Point Harbor.

Preliminary estimates by state officials suggest that California fishers landed no more than 15,000 salmon in July and August, the only two months during which salmon fishing was permitted in California waters. … “
