Posted by: Maven on September 16, 2010 at 10:10 amReceived via email, this letter to Westlands Water District, signed by Congresspersons Miller, Garamendi, Napolitano and Thompson asking for clarification of it’s surplus water, especially in light of the earlier arguments of significant hardship and demands for additional water exports from the Bay-Delta:
“We read with great interest the notice that Westlands Water District has more water at San Luis Reservoir than it can use this year, and is contemplating an exchange with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. While water transfers can be an important tool for both agricultural and urban water users, this announcement of “extra” federal water delivered to Westlands will come as a surprise to anyone who has seen Westlands’ political advocacy, press releases, and court filings over the course of this year.
Following Westlands claims of significant hardship, many stakeholders and policy makers in California and in Washington spent considerable time and energy this spring identifying additional water for Westlands. Obviously, the snow and rain California experienced led to increased Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project allocations over the course of the year, but if the federal government ultimately delivered more water to Westlands than its water users needed, it would seem that much of that earlier effort was misplaced. … “
