What a difference a year makes

Recently, the Drought Monitor was released, showing now all of California classified as being in various degrees of drought. Through most of the spring, most of California was considered in a drought; it took until mid-June for the entire state to earn that distinction.

What is interesting to look at is the difference between the drought monitor from August 1, 2006, where only a portion of the southeast corner had the classification, to the situation you see on the July 31, 2007 drought monitor. A look at the entire country shows that the southeastern United States is also experiencing a severe drought on the same scale - and in some parts, actually worse - as the Colorado River basin.

The drought monitor is produced weekly, and here’s a great webpage where you can compare any two drought monitors to see how conditions have changed - click here.
