Drought Prediction: West in a persistent drought

Posted by: Aqua Blog Maven on April 21, 2007 at 9:48 am

The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center has issued it’s weekly seasonal report, saying:

Prospects for significant drought relief across California, the Southwest, and the Great Basin are dim as the snow season comes to a close and snow pack remains well below normal. As of mid-April, California statewide snow water content stood at just 32 percent of normal.

We have experienced the driest year on record. Even with yesterdays rainfall, we are only at about 20% of normal precipitation. Unfortunately, the recent rain has done little to ease the persistent drought.

The water level at Hoover Dam is low (take a look!) and Lake Powell is at it’s lowest level since it was filled in 1980.

Much of the Southwest U. S. remains in a persistent drought, although some areas in Arizona & Idaho did improve somewhat. For the full report, click here.
