Delta Vision process goes public with statewide meetings
Posted by: Maven on August 12, 2008 at 10:08 amThe Governor's Delta Vision Blue Ribbon Task Force will take its Strategic Plan for the Delta on the road in August, visiting seven cities from Chico to San Diego to meet with community members to provide information, answer questions and receive public input to the plan.
The strategic plan, a vehicle for implementing the Task Force's vision for long-term sustainability for the Delta developed last year, will be finalized in October. It is expected that it will lead to legislation in 2009 to draft its recommendations into law.
Concern about sustainable management of the Delta's natural resources led Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to create the Task Force in late 2006 and appoint its members. Delta issues include more than declining fish species and the reliability of state and federal water projects. They also include: subsiding islands and fragile levees, invasive species that have negatively impacted the Delta's ecosystem, the risk of earthquakes to Delta levees, urbanization in areas that put persons and property at risk of flooding, and climate change and sea level rise, that also pose flooding risks to the Delta, most of which is below sea level.
