To say that some people who live on large, expensive properties in the northern part of Poway use a lot of water would be an understatement.
Compared with most of the city, they use a huge amount. Consider these statistics:
The median single-family house in the city uses about 27,000 gallons of water every two months, according to city records, or 36 units of about 748 gallons each in the billing terms the Poway uses. Median means half the city’s customers use more and half use less.
On average, the largest residential water user in Poway consumes 828,223 gallons per billing period – 31 times as much as the median customer. Twice in 2008 – for the billing periods of March/April and September/October – that same customer used more than 1.5 million gallons, or 56 times the average annual use of the median customer. In second place: a customer who uses 563,680 gallons on average every two months, or 21 times the median. Third place: 478,907 gallons, or 18 times the median.
In fact, 147 residential water customers in Poway used more than 200,000 gallons of water per billing period on average, according to the records.
