IID director Mike Abatti: Stake in suit outcome?

Posted by: Maven on April 12, 2009 at 6:57 am

From the Imperial Valley Press:

Whether James Abatti or his company, Madjac Farms Inc., is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Imperial Irrigation District could affect whether his brother, IID Director Mike Abatti, has a conflict of interest.

Jimmy Abatti filed the suit in January against the IID’s equitable distribution plan, which allocated certain amounts of water to different groups in the Imperial Valley in order to prevent going over its allotted amount of water from the Colorado River.

Because the suit deals with water rights and water available for land, IID attorney David Osias said Abatti’s company, Madjac Farms Inc., should be named as a plaintiff.

“Through Madjac, James A. Abatti receives approximately 25,000 acre-feet of water each year from IID at a cost of approximately $425,000 in 2008,” according to the suit.
