Drop 2 reservoir construction progressing smoothly

From the Imperial Valley Press:

Construction on the Drop 2 storage reservoir is moving slightly ahead of schedule as the developers push to get the whole project done early. “They are about 35 percent done, and we’ve only gone through 30 percent of our scheduled time,” said Michael Vandevelde, the project manager for Drop 2 with the Bureau of Reclamation.

The reservoir is scheduled to be completed by May 2010, but the developers are attempting to finish by January or February. “They’re pushing very hard to hit that time frame,” Vandevelde said, including working 20-hour days and running overnight shifts on some aspects of the project.

The reservoir, which broke ground in October, is located about 35 miles east of El Centro. It’s designed to hold up to 8,000 acre-feet of water, mostly in case a rainstorm creates extra water in the Valley. In those cases, the unused water in the All-American Canal flows to other water users.
