Activists vow to preserve south county’s natural heritage

Environmental groups discussed the state of south Sacramento County’s rich natural heritage Sunday and warned that the area’s resources are being threatened. The message: Environmental stewards ought to combine efforts to strengthen resource protections.

“The challenges come from a variety of directions,” said Rob Burness of Habitat 2020, which led the event. He raised the alarm about proposals for a peripheral canal and a high-voltage transmission line as well as the city of Elk Grove’s plan to push southward by more than 10,000 acres.

It’s time, he said, for environmental activists to increase their efforts. “We need to take it (an organized effort) to the next level,” Burness said.
