Kings River Conservancy sets out on first big project

Posted by: Maven on June 18, 2009 at 6:49 am

From the Fresno Bee:

The fledgling Kings River Conservancy this summer will launch its first major improvement project, thanks in large part to federal stimulus funding. It is a milestone for the nonprofit conservancy, established in late 2004 to improve public access to the river and to keep the Kings as pristine as possible.

By the end of summer, officials hope construction, funded with a $200,000 state grant, will be finished on Kings River Access Park next to Highway 180.

A large part of the funding came from $5.2 billion in the Build America Bonds, which is part of the federal Recovery Act.

There are many Kings park improvements ahead, conservancy officials said. Unlike the San Joaquin River to the north, there’s little need to purchase land for public access here. There are already 18 public parks and recreation sites where people flock to the river.
