Trinity River projects wrapping up

The restoration effort on the Trinity River is nearing the end of a first wave of projects intended to reshape the dammed river and improve fish habitat.
The Trinity River Restoration Program expects to start on the first of six final sites targeted for work this summer, and once all six are done, to take a step back to evaluate the changes.
The sawmill site just downstream from Lewiston is expected to be finished by this fall. The “steep, straight and simple” channel in the area would be modified by lowering adjacent floodplain areas and removing vegetation that prevents water from reaching the floodplain. Some banks will be reshaped, and side channels constructed.
Large gravel would be added to make the area self-sustaining and attractive for fish and wildlife, according to a draft environmental document just released. Some large logs and other structures would also be introduced to help form fish habitat.
The project is funded to the tune of $1.5 million.
