State water board awards $180K in stimulus to local agencies

From the Eureka Times-Standard:

The State Water Resources Control Board has delivered about $2.9 million in federal stimulus money to five communities — including $180,000 to the Humboldt Resource Conservation District — to protect public health and the environment, as well as create jobs for Californians. The money is allocated to California for clean water projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

According to a press release, the money to the conservation district will be used for Phase 4 of the Humboldt Agricultural Enhancement Program, to reduce animal waste and related pollution from Humboldt Bay and the Eel River estuary. Around 15 jobs will be created or retained, the release states.

Donna Chambers, conservation district executive director, said the money from the water board will allow the organization to continue the work it’s been doing for the past decade — that is, working with area landowners and dairy producers to improve the management of their land while enhancing the area’s natural resources.

Specifically, the district works with them to protect water quality by helping to improve the systems they use to collect, store and apply manure. ”This grant will help us continue the work for another three years,” she said.
