Letter to Editor: Plan to keep the Red Bluff Diversion Dam

Posted by: Maven on June 23, 2009 at 7:42 am

From the Tehama Daily News, this letter to the editor proposing a plan to provide an alternate passage for fish and save Lake Red Bluff:

Editor:

I am writing in regards to the Diversion Dam and Lake Red Bluff. There is a definite viable alternative to the dam’s discontinuation.

East of the Sacramento River is the Paynes Creek Slough. It runs north and south approximately parallel to the river. At present it is overgrown with brush and trees. In times of high water, it has flooded the residences at the south end of Kaer Avenue. It is just necessary to clean it up to provide an unfettered passage for the returning fish to spawn.

The commercial value of Lake Red Bluff has been often spoken of. The aesthetic value is not measurable in dollars. It seems that most of us want the lake to remain. It would be nice to return to the age old standard of, “A government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” I receive a request on a regular basis from my electric supplier to reduce my power consumption to help avoid a brown out. If we are now overloading our power supply, what will the addition of the proposed pumps do for us?
